This is Kambo

Kambo, also known as Sapo, is a transformative and ancient Amazonian healing medicine derived from the secretion of the giant monkey frog, Phyllomedusa bicolor. Indigenous tribes have used Kambo for centuries for its profound purification and rejuvenation properties in the spiritual, mental, emotional, and physical realms.

The Vaccine of the Jungle

Whether you're a newcomer or a seasoned Kambo warrior, welcome! Here, you'll discover all you need to prepare for your Kambo ceremony, from comprehensive and essential resources to expert recommendations. You'll also gain insight into my journeys deep into the Peruvian Amazon Jungle, where I've forged a profound connection with the giant monkey frogs. Whether you're seeking healing, self-discovery, or simply a reset, these resources will guide you through the entire process. From dietary recommendations to mental and emotional readiness, I will cover it all to ensure you have a safe and transformative Kambo experience.

Kambo Introduction

The giant monkey frog is native to the rainforests of Peru, Brazil, Bolivia, Colombia, and Venezuela. The potent secretion, Kambo has traditionally been used in the Amazon Jungle by various Indigenous tribes including the Matsés, Mayoruna, Yaminawá, and Katukina. The tribes have used Kambo to assist in times of illness, to gain stamina for hunting, and to cleanse negative energy known as "panema."

Kambo is gaining popularity in the West for its ability to assist with a wide range of health issues. This powerful frog medicine is an anti-inflammatory and an immune booster containing over 120 peptides. Peptides are the building blocks of proteins and are essential for maintaining homeostasis and overall health. In addition, they cross the blood-brain barrier, assisting with conditions such as PTSD, depression, anxiety, and cognitive function issues. Scientific studies show that some of these peptides have been successful in treating cancer.

Kambo has been used to treat migraines, chronic pain, osteoporosis, inflammation, viruses and bacteria, fertility issues in women, in addition to many other dis-eases. Kambo promotes mental clarity, a boost in energy and mood, detoxification, physical vitality, emotional well-being, and a strong immune system.

If you are familiar with the chakra system, the bright green color of the giant monkey frog correlates to the heart chakra making it a powerful medicine for issues surrounding the heart. Kambo can provide deeper insights into self love, trust, forgiveness, letting go, reconciling relationships, and assist in creating more intimate connections with self and others.

Backed By Scientific Studies

Receiving Kambo in the Peruvian Amazon Jungle, 2018

A peptide is a compound of two or more amino acids linked in a short chain that controls many functions in the human body. They are the building blocks of proteins and are essential for maintaining homeostasis and overall health. Peptides were one of the biggest 21st-century discoveries in human nutrition allowing scientists to gain a deeper understanding of fundamental biological processes and their roles in health and disease. Kambo contains over 120 peptides making it a unique and potent medicine.

Dermorphin

Well-Studied Peptides Found in Kambo

  1. Dermorphin is an opioid compound and is considered one of the most potent natural painkillers known. It attaches to the body's opioid receptors and may provide relief from chronic pain.

  2. Deltorphin is another opioid peptide found in Kambo and is also known for its potential pain-relieving properties. Both of these peptides are much stronger than morphine and the body's natural pain killer, beta-endorphin.

  3. Dermaseptin has potent antimicrobial properties, which means it can kill or inhibit the growth of a wide range of microorganisms, including bacteria, fungi, and some viruses. They achieve this by disrupting the cell membranes of these pathogens, leading to cell death. Scientific studies show that dermaseptin inhibits cancer cell growth by 90%.

  4. Phyllocaerulein stimulates the cardiovascular system, potentially leading to increased heart rate and improved circulation.

  5. Phyllomedusin crosses the blood-brain barrier and regulates the functions of dopamine, serotonin, and other neurotransmitters. It has also been suggested to stimulate the central nervous system, potentially leading to increased alertness and improved mental clarity.

  6. Phyllokinin is believed to have vasodilatory properties, which means it may help widen blood vessels, leading to improved blood flow.

  • Jungle-trained Kambo Practitioner

  • Certified Jikiden Reiki Practitioner

  • Offering private & group ceremonies

I began sharing Kambo in 2018 with my loved ones after it helped me with an emotional eating addiction. I planned to move to the Peruvian Amazon Jungle shortly after meeting the frogs, not realizing they had other plans for me. I now share this sacred medicine throughout the Americas and lead people on journeys to meet the giant monkey frogs in the Peruvian Amazon jungle.

I am committed to educating and sharing with integrity and respect for these magical beings, and it is a privilege to offer you sacred medicine combined with my experience and intuitive insights.

My First Kambo Experience

My first experience with Kambo took place in the backyard of a friend's home in Iquitos, Peru. It was swift and intense, lasting around 15 minutes, marked by profuse sweating and vomiting as my body released toxins.

Immediately afterward, my face swelled and I felt exhausted. It took nearly 10 days for me to recognize the profound change. As someone who struggled with emotional eating, I had a habitual tendency to overindulge, constantly scanning the fridge for my next fix. Yet, this time was different. I found myself halfway through my favorite meal, suddenly content. It was a pivotal moment of self-awareness, witnessing the internal dialogue between my higher self and ego.

This subtle yet monumental realization made me delve deeper into Kambo's potential. After discovering its effectiveness in addressing addiction, I felt a deep calling to return to the jungle. When I shared this with my teacher, he responded with a simple question: "Would you like to meet the frogs?"

...and here we are. 💚

Everything You Need To Know About Ceremony

In this section, you'll learn about the science and spirit of Kambo, how to best prepare, what happens in a ceremony, and how to integrate your experience. Let's begin with this 3-minute video explaining what happens in a Kambo ceremony:

How to Prepare

Let's begin with what NOT to do. The most common "disservice to self" that I see is when someone makes another person's experience their own. Yes, research and ask as many questions as you need, but do not create your story based on what someone else has experienced. Your experience is uniquely yours and you will receive exactly what you need. If you choose to sit with this medicine more than once, your responses may vary, and that is because your energy and what needs cleansing will be different each time. Make sense? Now that we have that out of the way, let's get into it...

Creating a personal connection with the spirit of every medicine you work with prior to receiving it is my highest recommendation. Spirit contains an intelligence that is beyond our human comprehension, and this foundational step can assist you in fast-tracking your desired intentions. I invite you to use the below images and video to connect with the spirit of Kambo. This can simply look like closing your eyes, visualizing the frog, sharing your intentions, asking specific questions, or asking the frog to share with you what you are ready to receive. Several people who have connected with the spirit of Kambo began seeing frogs and experiencing noticeable shifts prior to our time together. In addition, speaking and writing your intentions create a clear roadmap for your desired intentions.

Keep in mind that the lighter you are in your body, the deeper the medicine goes. Preparation is not about being perfect. It is about clearing the clutter from your mental and physical space so you can fully focus. Pay attention to your thoughts, the people you spend time with, your environments, and how they affect you. Take note of any distractions and try to let go of things that are not helping you evolve.

The below recommendations are to help you get the most out of your experience. Again, it's not about being perfect. Do your best to follow these for at least 7 days (unless I tell you otherwise) before our scheduled ceremony. I also recommend you continue to incorporate these into your integration for at least 7 days after receiving Kambo.

"Feeling safe creates space to be vulnerable, and vulnerability is a master key to healing."

What Happens

What Happens in Ceremony

An important piece of advice - make sure you feel safe with whoever shares medicine with you. Safety is the foundation for your healing. Ask specific questions about the facilitator, the space, and what is included. If you still don't feel comfortable, perhaps it's not a good fit. Please honor yourself and your safety.

Length of ceremony

A private ceremony can last approximately 2-3 hours and a group can be about 3-5 hours depending on the number of people (7 max). I recommend not having any commitments or responsibilities for the remainder of the day in case your body requires extra rest. Do not eat or drink anything other than water for at least 6 hours before ceremony.

What to bring

  1. One gallon of spring or purified room-temperature water

  2. Journal & pen

  3. Wear comfortable & loose-layered clothing

  4. Your intentions and an open heart

What You Can Expect

We will begin by opening ceremony with cleansing the space and your aura with sage - this is known as smudging. We will then give thanks to the land, spirits, and our ancestors who are assisting us in healing. From there we move into an intuitive discussion where a theme arises and each guest becomes medicine for the others.

I will then tune into your energy, share insights, and ask you to speak your intentions aloud. Afterward, we will move into a mini rapé (rah-pay) meditation session to relax your nervous system. Once you are in a completely relaxed state, you will drink approximately 2 liters of water just before I administer the Kambo gateways. The water is used to coat your stomach and will assist your body in releasing stored toxins. The gateways are small superficial burns made to the body (1-3 points are typical) where Kambo is placed.

Once the gateways are made, I will combine saliva with Kambo and place a small amount of Kambo on each of the gateways. Within about 30 seconds, you will begin to feel heat moving through your body.

If you are attending with a group, I will sit with and tune into each guest's energy separately just before sharing Kambo. The amount of medicine I share may be different for each person and will be dependent on each individual's sensitivity level, intentions, previous and current medical issues, and the guidance I receive from the spirit of Kambo.

Applying the gateways

Preparing the medicine

Common Effects While Receiving Kambo

Sweating

Rapid heartbeat

Nausea and/or vomiting

Diarrhea

Tingling in your extremities

Swelling in the face

Emotional releases

Please note that these effects are the body's way of releasing stored

toxins and unprocessed emotions that have accumulated over many years, if not a lifetime, depending on how frequently you cleanse your emotional, physical, and spiritual bodies.

Applying Kambo to the gateways.

This allows the medicine to go straight to the bloodstream.

The Kambo portion of ceremony lasts approximately 15-40 minutes, and you may continue to feel waves of cleansing throughout the day.

***Kambo is NOT a psychedelic; however, some unique experiences have been reported.***

While Kambo is not classified as a psychedelic, it's interesting to note that a few people have reported sensations during their sessions. Some have mentioned seeing colors and feeling as if they are in a psychedelic state. In rare cases, a few participants have even passed out temporarily and described journeys to other realms where they received valuable insights to navigate their lives. Upon awakening, these individuals have reported feeling exceptionally light and relaxed. If you happen to have such an experience, rest assured that I am here to support you. In this instance, I will pour water over your head, helping you fully return to your body and the present moment.

Right After Kambo

Your body may need to rest for the remainder of the day or you may feel energized and want to be in nature. Whichever is the case for you, I recommend that you not have any commitments for the remainder of the day so that you can do as your body wishes. A cold shower can assist you in returning fully to your physical body and boost your energy.

What to Eat

Everyone responds to food differently after Kambo. Some will want to keep it light with juice, fruit, or salad. Some may need more grounding with dense foods. The most important thing is to honor your body by nourishing it with whole foods high in vitamins, minerals, and electrolytes such as coconut water, watermelon, and leafy greens. Click the "Preparation Guidelines" button below for comprehensive lists of what to include in your preparation and integration diet.

What Not to Eat

Do not eat foods that are difficult for you to digest. Be aware of how you feel after eating a meal, keep a food journal, and continue to refrain from gluten, fried and processed foods as they cause inflammation. I recommend following the preparation guidelines for at least 7 days after Kambo so that you can really feel the effects.

Kambo Is Not For Everyone

Kambo is a deeply transformative and powerful medicine. It can also be a very physical one, and it is difficult to know how each person will react. Kambo contains components that can be contradictory to some medications. For your safety, it is important that we discuss any medical issues prior to ceremony.

Though I have worked with people who have had some of the below, let's have a deeper discussion if any of these apply to you:

  • Surgery within the last 6 months

  • Pregnant or breast-feeding

  • Currently have severe epilepsy

  • Taking medication for low blood pressure

  • A brain hemorrhage or aneurysm

  • A stroke, heart attack, or any issues with your heart

  • Had an organ transplant

  • Currently on or recently finished chemo-therapy or radiation

  • Currently or recently finished anti-depressants and/or opioids

Please consult your doctor if you are unsure.

Integrating Your Experience

Congratulations on becoming a Kambo Warrior! Now what?

Preparation and integration are two important anchors of your experience. Integration is when you actively incorporate what you have learned/received from ceremony and apply it to your everyday life. Integration is different for everyone, and honoring your body and focusing on actively creating a life that you love are keys. You are now the newest and greatest version of yourself. Please refer to the preparation guidelines above as they will assist you integrating your experience.

Common Noticeable Effects of Kambo

  • Heightened senses, clarity, and less mind chatter

  • Relaxed and calm demeanor

  • Clearing of or lessening of addictive behavior

  • Desire to incorporate self-love practices and a deep awareness of self-sabotaging activities

  • Sensitivity to certain foods

  • Relief from pain in the body

Above are just a few common results of Kambo, and your results may vary. In my first experience with Kambo, it took nearly 10 days after ceremony to become fully aware of the subtle clarity regarding an emotional eating addiction.

Kambo can be a powerful companion on your journey to reclaim your inner strength and purpose. Similar to the preparation process, integration isn't about perfection; it's about reconnecting with your authentic self. Kambo helps peel away the layers of life's clutter, making it easier to attune to your true essence. Be mindful of the habits, relationships, experiences, and thoughts that no longer serve you, and take decisive steps to align with what truly resonates with your well-being and brings you genuine fulfillment.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Kambo a psychedelic?
Technically, no. However...
While Kambo is not classified as a psychedelic, it's interesting to note that a few people have experienced unusual sensations. Some have mentioned seeing colors and feeling as if they are in a psychedelic state. In rare cases, a few guests have even passed out temporarily and described journeys to other realms where they received valuable insights to navigate their lives. Upon awakening, they reported feeling exceptionally light and relaxed. If you happen to have such an experience, I will make sure that you are in a safe position and will pour water over your head, helping you fully return to your body and the present moment.

Is Kambo legal?
The legal status of Kambo varies from country to country. In Brazil and Australia, it is considered a controlled substance or illegal, while in others, it may be unregulated or used for religious and spiritual purposes.

Is Kambo safe?
Yes, Kambo is generally regarded as safe when working with an experienced practitioner. It is important to note that Kambo can be an intense experience, both physically and emotionally. To safeguard your well-being, I strongly advise you to choose a practitioner who has a pre-ceremony process that includes asking about your physical, medical, and emotional health. There are contradictions with certain medications and conditions, which is why it's important to discuss these with your practitioner.

What are the potential benefits of Kambo?
Kambo has various potential benefits, including detoxification, increased energy, improved mental clarity, and enhanced physical and emotional well-being. It is often used as a means of purging negative energy known as "panema", toxins, and emotional baggage. Kambo is also used as a tool for personal growth, self-discovery, and connecting with the spiritual world.

How is Kambo administered?
Kambo is administered by applying the frog's secretion to small burns or superficial wounds on the skin known as gateways. The skin is first gently burned, and then the Kambo secretion is applied topically. The substance is absorbed through the skin into the bloodstream.

Will the burns hurt me and how long do they last?
The burns (gateways) are swiftly made using a small round tamishi or incense stick. This will remove only the top layer of skin, exposing the capillaries underneath. The burns are considered superficial and are not meant to induce bleeding.

The level of scarring can vary from person to person. Many individuals' s gateways, including mine, disappeared entirely. To aid in the healing process, I apply Dragon's Blood to the scars after removing Kambo. This natural resin can assist in quick healing and reduce the visibility of the scars.

How many burns do you apply?
I do not share the same amount of medicine on everyone. The amount will be dependent on a few things including the individual's sensitivity level, intentions, previous and current medical issues, and my guidance from the spirit of Kambo. The medicine that I use is potent, and I typically apply between 1-3 burns (gateways) with three being a full cleanse.

What are the potential side effects of Kambo?
Kambo can cause various side effects, including nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, dizziness, increased heart rate, and swelling of the face. These effects are typically short-lived and part of the purging process. In rare cases, a healing crisis can occur, which is when someone has an illness just under the surface that is activated by Kambo to be released. This can often cause flu-like symptoms days after receiving Kambo.

How often should I do Kambo?
The choice is yours. Whether you opt for a single session or commit to a series of three within a month, coinciding with the lunar cycle, the frequency of your Kambo experiences is a personal decision. For those addressing specific health challenges, such as cancer, more frequent applications can be beneficial, like engaging in three ceremonies within a week or back-to-back sessions over three days. Each individual's journey with Kambo is unique, with some finding profound benefits from just one ceremony, while others prefer the rhythm of the lunar cycle. To make the best choice for your specific needs, I recommend discussing your options in greater detail with your practitioner.

How do you source Kambo?
Sourcing Kambo is a profound and respectful process deeply connected to their natural environment. The frogs are nocturnal and live in the trees above still water, often near ponds or lagoons in the Amazon Jungle. We begin late at night by making an offering of mapacho (tobacco) to the protectors of the jungle. Once near still water, we call out to these frogs. We identify their location by listening for their distinctive response. Once we locate a frog, we extend a branch, and the frog willingly crawls onto it.

The next steps involve great care and reverence. We place the frog gently on the ground, securing its arms and legs to stakes that stretch its body out. Using a very small stick, we insert it just inside the frog's nostril and turn it slightly. This gentle irritation prompts the frog to secrete the poison from its back and legs. We then use a smooth-ended stick to collect the secretion and place it onto another stick.

Typically, we gather medicine from three to four frogs to fill an entire stick. This ensures that each frog retains enough poison to protect itself after our interaction. We offer words of gratitude, kisses, and prayers before returning the frog to the exact location where we initially found it. Here is how I receive Kambo from the frogs.

Is Kambo ethically sourced?
The ethical sourcing of Kambo is a vital consideration for anyone interested in this medicine. It's a complex issue with no simple answer, and it's crucial to discuss this with your practitioner. Unfortunately, some practitioners order Kambo online without a clear understanding of how the medicine is obtained, and there are instances of locals mistreating the frogs, which can affect the potency of the medicine. To truly know if Kambo is ethically sourced, one option is to request footage or information about the sourcing process. Alternatively, traveling to the jungle to connect directly with the frogs is a possibility, which I am happy to organize. In all cases, it's important that we honor these sacred beings in their natural environment.

Can Kambo be used with psychedelics?
Yes. Kambo is known for its ability to energetically cleanse and purify the body, which can prepare you for a deeper and more meaningful psychedelic experience. Personally, I have done Kambo upon waking followed by Ayahuasca at night, and I found this combination to be more powerful than my stand-alone Ayahuasca ceremonies. Additionally, I co-facilitate retreats that begin with Kambo to purify the body and progress to psychedelics. It is important to have an open conversation with your Kambo practitioner to ensure that this combination is suitable for your specific circumstances.
